Elvia Camayd had been waiting for the right moment to pursue her dream of studying a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property. In the spring of 2008 those dreams, in a happy coincidence, crossed paths with the University of Puerto Rico's interest in fortifying their IP endeavors. When the University of Puerto Rico sought to commercialize the research being done on its campuses, they turned to Camayd for help. She had worked as Chief Legal Counsel for the University for nearly ten years, dealing with everything from procurement contracts to student issues. Camayd welcomed the opportunity to further her education to support the University's goals. To prepare for her new responsibility for tech transfer, she decided to augment her JD with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree.
Camayd searched coast-to-coast for a suitable degree program but it was a visit to Pierce Law that solidified her decision to enroll. She was attracted by school's comprehensive intellectual property offerings as well as the beautiful surroundings of Concord. Camayd says the people she has met have been welcoming and helpful.
Though her free time is fleeting, Camayd counts traveling as one of her passions. High on her list of dream vacations is a trip to the Mediterranean, specifically Greece. Living in Puerto Rico has fostered a deep love for locales boasting sand and sunshine.
After completing Pierce Law's LLM program in May, Camayd will be spending the summer in Boston working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Office of Sponsored Programs. She's looking forward to applying her newly honed skills in an academic setting. It will be an immensely valuable experience considering she'll be doing similar tasks upon her return to the University of Puerto Rico.
