The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) and the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will be screening "A Lawyer Walks Into A Bar" tonight (April 15, 2009) at 6:30 p.m. in room 227. Everyone welcome to attend. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The film highlights the trials and tribulations of trying to pass the State Bar of California exam and follows six wanna-be lawyers struggling to prepare and actually pass the test with the lowest national pass rate. The movie not only portrays the fight of the average law school student, but also of the minority and not so fortunate law student trying to pass and be admitted to a major state bar. One of the test takers in the documentary is Donald Baumeister, an ex-Marine and working father, who had failed the California bar 41 times and is shown in the movie gearing up for attempt #42.
The film has been lauded and won awards at many independent film festivals including having won the Grand Jury Prize at AFI Dallas's Texas Competition, and Boulder Colorado's Toofy Fest's Best Narrative Feature. Come see the lighter side to the struggle to become a lawyer and pass the most daunting bar exam in the country!
