Professor Ashlyn Lembree attends the AALS Conference on Clinical Legal Education in Tuscon, Arizona, through Wednesday. She and a group of IP Clinicians will be holding a conference-within-the-conference for IP Clinicians.

 

Tuesday, May 6

Pierce Law's Bridget Anderson, a licensed massage therapist, will once again be offering chair massages to all students, faculty and staff on today and tomorrow. If you are feeling stressed, need a break from studying, or just want to relax, sign up for a 15 minute massage.  Cost is $10. 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 201. Sign-up sheets for specific time appointments will be placed on the door of room 201. 

Boston Area Alumni networking breakfast. Theo Vougias JD '03 hosts this gathering for Boston-area alumni at the offices of Gosselin & Associates in Winchester, MA.

Professor Marcus Hurn testifies before the NH Senate Judiciary Committee on House Bill 1270. This bill, of which Professor Hurn in the main author, involves a major reform of the law of future interests in real estate.  It has already passed the NH House without opposition.

Today is World Press Freedom Day, a day designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 

Looking ahead...

Alleviate some of the finals-related stress at Pierce Law Hillel's annual Bagel Brunch, Sunday May 4 in the Jury Box.  Bagels, lox, cream cheese and juice will be served. The entire Pierce Law community is welcome, and there's no cover! The Hillel Bagel Brunch is a Student Bar Association-sponsored event.

Happy Earth Day! Groundwork Concord is sponsoring a cleanup event at the Kiwanis Riverfront Park/Everett Arena on Earth Day, from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. One of the core themes of Earth Day this year is the increase in invasive plants from global warming. Teams will help eradicate invasive vines and brambles from riverfront trees and slopes. For more information, call Groundwork Concord at 224-3710.

Exit Counseling for Graduating Students. All students who have received Federal Stafford and Perkins Loans while attending Pierce Law must complete Exit Counseling before they graduate.  You can do this either in person at this meeting or online at www.mapping-your-future.org. This last in-house session will last one hour. Lunch will be served. 12 noon in Room 200.

In preparation for summer construction, the Bookstore movies to the faculty lounge, Room 218, today. THey reopen for business on Wednesday in their new location.

Today is World Book and Copyright Day, a.k.a. the International Day of the Book.

Not to leave out other media: on this day in 1867, William Lincoln patented the zoetrope, a machine which shows animated pictures by mounting a strip of drawings in a wheel, and 20 years ago today, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon ended its record 14-year run on the Billboard 200 chart.

The 10th Annual Patent Cooperation Treaty Seminar is held today and tomorrow at the Grappone Conference Center, Concord. 

Judy Gire, Cindy Landau, Barry Shanks, Jon Cavicchi, Kathy Fletcher and Matt Jenks will attend the Law Librarians of New England (LLNE) Spring meeting in Freeport, Maine hosted by the University of Maine Law School Library. Kathy Fletcher currently serves as President of LLNE.

The Moot Court Board invites all first- and second-year students interested in applying to participate in Moot Court next year to an informative meeting at 12:10 p.m. in room 229. The Board will be there to discuss the try out process, what competitions are available, what being on moot court entails, as well as to answer any questions students might have. Whether you know you want to try out or you are considering trying out, we invite you to come learn all about Moot Court.

Death Penalty Forum hosted by the Pierce Law Review and the Social Justice Institute. This panel discussion will coincide with Pierce Law Review’s publication of a special death penalty issue, with articles written by experts in the field, law professors, and Pierce Law students.

National Hanging Out Day. Alexander Lee, a Concord lawyer, founded this annual event as part of Project Laundry List to encourage saving energy through hanging laundry instead of using the clothes dryer.

 

Looking ahead

Hillel will be holding its annual Passover Seder on Sunday, April 20th at 6:00pm in the Board room. Everyone is encouraged to attend the Seder, regardless of faith.  Friends & family members are welcome.  Tickets are $5, which includes a full catered meal and wine. Children can attend for free.

Friday, April 11

The Pierce Law Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA) annual Symposium begins at 1:30 in Room 229. The theme this year is "IP Owners at WIPO: Opportunities and Challenges". The Symposium will feature a panel of high-profile and well-known speakers, including WIPO officials, leading US and European attorneys and academics. It concludes with an evening reception at 5:40 p.m.

Pierce Law hosts the Concord Family YMCA's 4th Annual Spring Social on Thursday, April 10, beginning at 5:30 PM. The event benefits the Kids Campaign Fund. The evening will include a microbrew and wine tasting, yummy appetizers, and live and silent auctions.

Wednesday, March 26

Professor Mary Wong is in New York, speaking at the 5th Annual Asian IP Law & Policy Day: The Developing Legal Ecosystem for IP in Asia, and the 16th Annual Fordham International IP Law & Policy Conference, both at the Fordham Law School, today through Friday. The conference draws 139 speakers from 19 countries (including judges, government officials, academics and practitioners from the United States, Europe and Asia) and a total of 375 participants from 31 countries. This year, Professor Wong will be delivering a paper on comparative national implementations of Articles 6 & 8 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty, and will also be on two panels: one on copyright models in a Web 2.0 world, and the other on copyright infringement cases against individual peer-to-peer downloaders.

Dean Hutson is in Philadelphia as a guest speaker at the "Peter Jennings Project for Journalists and the Constitution" at the National Constitution Center. Director of Publications and Media Relations Sharon Callahan will also be attending.

Professor Bill Hennessey is in Ghana for a UNAIDS HIV/AIDS Summit this week. He will introduce and deliver 36 copies of the "IP Management Handbook in Health and Agricultural Innovation" that Stanley Kowalski helped compile, and which was published with the support of Pierce Law, with contributions from Karen Hersey and Karl Jorda.  He is a member of the Board of Patrons of the Handbook. 

Daylight Savings Time begins: clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m.

Put your best face forward! Photographer Tom Kates will be on campus today and tomorrow. He and his assistant will be taking pictures to provide imagery for admissions and the web site. Red Cross Blood Drive: The Red Cross is in URGENT NEED of blood! Severe winter weather conditions have taken a considerable toll on the states blood supply. There is less than one day supply of some blood types.
The need is real!  Please give blood! 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Jury Box and Room 101.

A big welcome to Richard "Rich" Mechaber, the new Database Administrator for Franklin Pierce Law Center. Rich's duties initially will be to get the new upgrade to CAMS installed and running smoothly, interfacing with all departments making sure their CAMS needs are met. You can find Rich next to Marc and Paul in the Computer Services office on the third floor.

Welcome also to Mary Magoon, our new Admissions Coordinator, who starts today in the admissions office.

Deborah Williams of Alaska Conservation Solutions visits from Alaska to talk about the impact of global warming on her state and on New Hampshire. Her presentation will also offer practical carbon-reducing strategies that individuals, communities and governments can take that not only reduce carbon emissions but also protect human health, save money and decrease America's energy independence. Winter Break

It's winter break week in New Hampshire and at Pierce Law! A New England tradition that just happens to be a boon for the Granite State's winter sports industry. But, hey, we're for it. So sleep in on Monday. Tuesday go for a walk, shop, and warm up with a hot chocolate or coffee on Main Street. Go skiing on fresh powder Wednesday. See the Robot Parade on Thursday. Leap for joy on Friday. Study for Monday's exam on Friday and Saturday and get some rest on Sunday!

Director of Graduate Programs Debbie Beauregard and Professor Karen Hersey are in San Diego through Saturday attending the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) 2008 meeting as an exhibitor representing Pierce Law.

Robot Parade! See the robots that the children made - at the Verizon Center in Manchester at the FIRST Robotics Competition today through Saturday. The event is free to the public, and the finals are on Saturday. FIRST is a high school level robotics competition that began here in New Hampshire more than 10 years ago, and was founded by local inventor Dean Kamen. A FIRST team consists of students, teachers, and volunteer engineers and mentors. There will be 48 teams at the NH regional, which is one of almost 50 regionals around the country. FIRST events are exciting, intense and loud, so you may want to bring earplugs. The robots this year can weigh up to 120 lbs, and measure up to 6 feet tall. There will be robot racing, "shotput" and more!

Professor Karl Jorda delivers the 2008 Foulston Siefkin Lecture on the thirtieth anniversary of this lecture series at Washburn University School of Law, Topeka, Kansas. He will present a talk on "Patent/Trade Secret Complementariness - An Unsuspected Synergism," which will also be published in the next issue of the Washburn Law Journal. Previous Foulston Siefkin lecturers include Judge Alex Kozinski, Dean Mark Sargent and Professors Jeffrey Rosen, Marc Steinberg and Erwin Chemerinsky.

A delegation of global leaders visits Pierce Law to learn about Intellectual Property rights. The International IP Organization invites interested students to meet with them at a wine and cheese reception in the Rotunda at 12 noon. 

2008 PIC Showcase. Representatives from seven agencies who have hired PIC interns in the past will be at tables in the hallways outside the Rich Room from 12 noon to 1 p.m. to talk to interested law students about summer internship experiences. The agencies are the New Hampshire Public Defender's Office, New Hampshire Legal Assistance, New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, Merrimack County Attorney's Office, Hillsborough County Attorney's Office, Legal Advice and Referral  Center, and the Disabilities  Rights  Center.

The February staff meeting is held at 11 a.m. in Room 205. 

Dean Hutson is in Los Angeles today through Friday, attending the Deans' Conference at the ABA mid-year meeting.  

Professor Emeritus Richard A. Hesse appears on a panel preceding the presentation of "TOP SECRET: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers" at the Capitol Center for the Arts. The Panel is at 6:30 and the performance begins at 7:30. Others on the panel are Mike Pride, Editor of the Concord Monitor and Judge Steven McAuliffe of the United States District Court.

Concord High School teacher Christa McAuliffe was one of seven astronauts who perished when the space shuttle Challenger disintigrated shortly after liftoff on this day in 1986. Prior to teaching at the high school, McAuliffe worked in the office of the New Hampshire Attorney General. Concord's Christa McAulliffe Planetarium is named in her honor.

After more than 30 years of service to Pierce Law, Paula Jewell retires from her position as Access Services Supervisor in the Pierce Law Library today. For over 25 years Paula has kept the Circulation Desk, reserve collection and library publications working like a well-oiled machine and has managed to provide a tone of helpful service while carefully enforcing the library’s policies. Paula has also served as editor of Library Notes and more recently E-Notes. In addition to her work in the library, Paula also served on the Pierce Law Conduct Code Committee and two consecutive terms as Pierce Law Staff Moderator. After years of opening the library at 7:45 a.m. every weekday, of training hundreds of student workers, of enforcing library rules and collecting overdue fines with a smile and making the library a better place for everyone, Paula will now have time to enjoy the things she loves: her family, gardening, cooking, reading, and art projects. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday: School closed, but...

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Day, Pierce Law will be closed on Monday, January 21st. Some make-up classes will be held, however, due to the early closing this previous Monday, the 14th.

The campus and the library will remain open for students to use during normal hours, 7:45 am to 12 midnight. The doors to the school will be open from 7am until 5pm except for the main Washington Street student entrance which is open until midnight, following the Library hours.

It's Study and Exam Period! 

Fred Millett '08, worked on the brief in a death penalty case before the Supreme Court this week, Snyder v. Louisiana, as part of his externship this semester at the Southern Center of Human Rights. Fred attended the arguments Tuesday, which were reported on by Slate's indomitable Dahlia Lithwick. 

Last week Adjunct Professor Jim Silva became the new Chairman of the Merrimack Valley Regional Housing Consortium. This consortium is a quasi-government committee that promotes the creation of affordable housing in the Merrimack Valley region of Massachusetts.  Currently, 8 Massachusetts towns are part of this group:  Billerica, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Dunstable, Dracut, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough and Westford. Congratulations, Jim!

Food Drive: The 1L Class is collecting food and non-perishables for the holidays to address a critical shortage in supplies at the New Hampshire Food Bank. The crisis has worsened in recent weeks with inventory at an all time low, and food coming in at a slow pace. The most urgently-needed items include:

  • Protein items such as canned tuna or chicken and canned stews and pasta
  • Peanut butter
  • 100% juice boxes (no glass please)
  • Canned fruits in light syrup, applesauce
  • Canned vegetables, tomatoes and tomato sauce
  • Soups

Winter Clothing Drive: To aid the Interfaith Refugee Resettlement Program, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) is collecting winter clothing. There is a collection box in the Lobby opposite Jan’s desk. The drive will accept donations through November 30th.

 

Sunday, November 18

Professor Mitchell Simon is in Georgia attending the 2007 workshop of the National Institute for Teaching Ethics and Professionalism. Professor Simon was selected as one of twenty 2007 Fellows by the Institute.

 

Monday, November 19

The International Intellectual Property Organization (IIPO) hosts its first "Brown Bag" Lunch Seminar. Gerardo J. Guillen MIP '07 will speak on "Intellectual Property in Central America." Room 200 from 12:10 - 1pm. Lunch will be served. Sponsored by the SBA and the Graduate Programs Office.

PAD holds open meeting from noon until 1:00pm in the Rich Room. This meeting aims to generate interest in PAD and recruit new students for our initiation that will take place after Thanksgiving. Food will be provided. PAD is the largest legal fraternity and membership benefits include access to law study systems, The Princeton Review, student loan consolidation, Brooks Brothers discounts, a health insurance program, GEICO Auto Insurance, Budget Truck rentals, and more.

Today is the anniversary of Mexico's 1910 Revolution. 

If he were alive, today would be the 82nd birthday of Robert F. Kennedy, the 64th Attorney General of the United States and younger brother of President John F. Kennedy.

The Nuremburg Trials, in which the International Military Tribunal tried 24 of the most important captured leaders of Nazi Germany, began on this day in 1945.

 

Wednesday, November 21

Today is both World Television Day and World Hello Day, each of which encourage peace through cultural exchange and communication. Possibly no one could personify this combination better than the peaceful accordionist, bandleader and North Dakota icon Lawrence Welk, who supported World Hello Day wholeheartedly, noting that his years on television gave him dozens of opportunities to greet people each day.

Give happy thanks! Today is Thanksgiving, always held the fourth Thursday in November.

The first Presidential proclamation of the holiday was in 1789 after Elias Boudinot, member of the House of Representatives from Massachusetts, moved that a day of Thanksgiving be held "to thank God for giving the American people the opportunity to create a Constitution to preserve their hard won freedoms."

Pierce Law will be closed today and Friday for Thanksgiving.

The Alumni Phonathon runs for a second week today through Thursday,with students calling Pierce Law alumni. In addition to asking for contributions, students provide alumni with an update on recent Pierce Law news and activities, offer to deliver messages and greetings to faculty and staff, and confirm home and business contact information. 

 

Monday, November 12

Admissions Open House for prospective students, 9 a.m. to 12 Noon.

Professor Mary W. S. Wong is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, speaking at the 2nd Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which lasts from today through Thursday. The IGF is a multi-stakeholder meeting convened by the UN Secretary-General, as mandated by the 2005 World Summit on the Information Society. Through the 1st IGF last year, Wong works with NGOs, IP advocates and major industry representatives in the A2K@IGF coalition for access to knowledge (A2K). This year, she will again be speaking at the A2K@IGF workshop, on best practices for negotiating copyright and digital rights management protections in bilateral free trade agreements. This presentation is based on an ongoing research project here at Pierce Law, where Wong has been assisted by alumnus Nick Barnes and current 3L Mike Bartley.

Michelle M. Winchester of Pierce Law's Institute for Health, Law and Ethics appears before the New Hampshire House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee to speak on the topic of "Recommendations to Improve Health Information Privacy." 

Barbara Wilson is in California at Sacramento State for their annual Law School Forum.

Journalist Dahlia Lithwick gives this year's Bownes Forum address, "Supreme Changes: How Supreme Court Press Coverage has Changed in a Few Short Years."

Lithwick writes a column entitled "Supreme Court Dispatches" for Slate, an online magazine. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, the New Republic, Elle, the Ottawa Citizen, and the Washington Post. In 2001, she received the Online News Association's award for online commentary.

Career Services are the guest instructors for the 1L Legal Skills classes today. We have invited hiring attorneys from different legal employers to speak with 1Ls about what they look for when hiring a candidate. The invited attorneys are: Jeanine Poole from Sulloway & Hollis in Concord; Richard Uchida JD '84 from Crisp, Barrett, Hebert & Uchida in Concord; Kris Spath JD '85, Associate Attorney General and Chief of Staff at the NH Attorney General's Office; Tom Sullivan from the IP boutique firm of Lowrie, Lando and Anastasi in Cambridge, MA; and Amy Messer, Legal Director of the Disability Rights Center in Concord.

Director of Publications and Media Relations Sharon Callahan is in New York today and tomorrow visiting the headquarters of Calvin Klein for the cover story of the January issue of the Pierce Law magazine. The story will highlight alumna Dawn Buonocore '95, who has helped so many students obtain externships, including 3L Sara Lentini who is currently externing at Calvin Klein.  

Assistant Director of Admissions Barbara Wilson begins a recruiting tour of North Carolina, meeting with students at UNC-Wilmington.
